The American architect and designer Charles Eames was undoubtedly one of the most influental designers of the twentieth century. His first major success came in 1940 when, in collaboration with Eero Saarinen, he produced the winning chair design for the Museum of Modern Art's competition "Organic Design in Home Furnishings". Exibited at the museum in 1941, these chais were innovative in their use of plywood shels moulded not in one direction as in the work of Aalto or Breuer, but in two directions to create a truly "sculptural", three-dimensional effect.
