Harry Bertoia fled ltaly when be was fifteen to study sculpture
at the Institute of Technology of Detroit. In 1937 he become
teacher at the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts and at the
Cranbrook Academy of Arts. He was born as a painter and sculptor
in his early career he made a lot of things, working in many
different fields, designing even jewels. During the '40s he
started to design furniture. “ Space goes through them-writes
Bertoia about his chairs-looking them we can notice that they
are made by air, like a sculpture ”. Even realising that a
chair design needs functional solutions (and be found them
out, his chairs are really confortable), he considers chairs
like sculptures in the space. He gives a lot of importance
to space, colours and to the metal characteristics. In his
chair of 1952 all the elements are hand-made with an elaborate
process. Bertoia as sculptor turns his architectural interest
toward form and metal, to create the chair he used a diagonal
square, slightly deformed: movement of forms with good results.
The chair is light and confortable; with optional of padded
seat, an amateur piece. Bertoia ranks as one of the most fashionable
chairs designer of the '50s; the careful detailing and feeling
of space reflect completely the aesthetic concern of his architecture.
Creating sculptures be develops a lot of new metal chair designs,
perfect expression of technology and creative arts. Today
his chairs are well known all over in the world.
